The connecting road linking Riverview's new highway with Lawson Avenue certainly wasn't accomplished without some controversy and problems with water this spring. But what a gorgeous summer stroll has been added to our landscape.

The road takes you along a protected wetland and it is not at all uncommon to see extraordinary birds of all description come soaring over the grasses against our blue summer skies.

Naturalist John Muir extols the virtues of climbing mountains to get their good tidings, but personally, I find it a lot easier on the breath to stroll the wetlands instead. Either way, the result is the same.

To quote Muir: "Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like falling leaves."

You can walk along the highway until it meets the road that extends from Findlay Boulevard. There you can turn either left or right, with both walks satisfying and of solid duration. The Town of Riverview has thoughtfully placed some benches in this area as well so if you find the heat overpowering, rest a bit.

Of course, if you choose to turn left and then take the road leading over to the new Scotia Bank and assortment of stores, you can also get refreshed by the satisfying portions of ice cream served at Ava's Ice Cream Bar. It is rapidly gaining a great reputation for its big scoops and great selection.

Of course, then you'll have to walk even farther to work off the calories.
