Taking steps to protect the environment
Published Thursday October 29th, 2009

We are fortunate to live in Canada, a country blessed with natural beauty, pristine landscapes, and diverse ecosystems. It is essential that we work to protect this blessing by preserving it for future generations. That is why our Conservative government is taking concrete steps to preserve and protect the environment.
The Government of Canada remains committed to reducing Canada's total greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent from 2006 levels by 2020 and 60 to 70 per cent by 2050.
We are also building on our leadership role in the development of new, clean technologies by founding a global partnership that advances carbon capture and storage capabilities. These advances will dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate high-quality jobs for Canadians.
In New Brunswick, our government has invested $9.4 million in federal public transit funds and $8.3 million in public transit operators, a significant portion of which will benefit Greater Moncton. This will help reduce automobile emissions by encouraging public transit.
Under our government's Building Canada Fund, we are putting additional funding toward green infrastructure projects and water and wastewater initiatives that provide clean drinking water to communities while keeping the environment free from sewerage contamination.
This August, our government announced $1.4 million of federal funding for upgrades to Riverview's wastewater system, which will make it more efficient and reliable.
This improvement ensures that Riverview will receive clean water that is treated effectively and responsibly.
Our Conservative government is working to protect the environment for all Canadians, and as the first government to take concrete action to achieve this locally, we are committed to accomplishing this goal.
