Federal opposition leader Stéphane Dion recently announced the list of Official Opposition critics for the upcoming session of Parliament. Among them is Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Brian Murphy, who has been named the Official Opposition Critic for Justice.
"I am honoured and thrilled with the opportunity Mr. Dion as provided me," says Brian Murphy.
"I will take on this role with a keen appreciation of the responsibility involved in addressing very important issues that affect our families and our communities."
"Since we are in a minority government situation," he adds, "I think that it is imperative that all Parliamentarians work together, in a spirit of cooperation, to improve our justice system, so that all people are treated fairly and the right people end up being punished appropriately."
"Having been a member of the Standing Committee on Justice in the last session of Parliament, I know that we have important issues that still need to be addressed," he says.
"That's why it will be crucial for committee meetings to function smoothly, for members to set aside partisan tactics so that the justice committee can do its work."
Murphy comes to this new position with a great deal of experience on justice matters: having served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice, Associate Justice Critic for the Liberal Party as well as working on the Liberal Party's Caucus Committee on Justice in addition to having worked as a lawyer for many years.
He will be working closely with new Brampton West MP, Andrew Kania, who has been named Associate Justice Critic.
"I look forward to working with Andrew," he says. "He brings years of experience as a lawyer and has been active in his community.
"Together, our goal will be to make sure that justice legislation reflects the views and values of all Canadians."
Parliament resumed business this week in Ottawa.
