Telegraph Journal Editorial points finger in the wrong direction

The TJ Editorial today "Price bracket or straitjacket?" is critical of fuel regulation in New Brunswick and if NBers are paying too much says the paper, the crux of their anger should be at government.

"Consumers are wondering why fuel prices in New Brunswick haven't fallen as quickly as those in other jurisdictions as the price of oil has gone down. It's a reasonable question, and it deserves an answer from government."

No, it deserves an answer from oil companies.

Oil companies have made it clear they don't like regulation and would love to have it scrapped. As I've written before I was never a big fan of it either but what I've witnessed in recent weeks has made it clear that it's a necessary evil, warts and all.

Regulation means there's a maximum price gas stations can charge, not a minimum. If the price goes down they are free to lower the price they charge consumers on their own without government forcing them too. Clearly they don't want to do that.

The answer about why lies with them and needs to be asked to companies like Irving which owns the Telegraph Journal. Long time readers know I have no interest in criticizing the Irvings (or anyone else) simply for the sake of criticizing but editorials like this do nothing to reduce the skepticism that the editorial page is a mouthpiece for Irving interests.

Balance please.
