The fur flys over EFI

It's a hot topic and well it should be but MAN, there's some nasty comments flying all around over at the Telegraph Journal today regarding a story about the Parents for Fairness.

When 100 people protested the changes, not for two seconds did I think it was only 100 people who cared and that their concerns weren't valid. My beef was that there was obviously another side to the story which hadn't been heard and was being ignored. Apparently some think it should have stayed that way.

I don't have kids so the EFI issue is not of real concern to me. I am an Anglophone who grew up in a pretty much 100% English area and even to this day, the number of French or bilingual people that I would have the opportunity to "test my French" with is limited.

That said, I am envious of those who are bilingual and when someone apologizes for their broken English, I let them know that it's not necessary because their English is so much better than my French. To have the courage to speak a language you're not completely familiar with is something to be recognized and applauded.

As for the EFI program, whatever system gives kids the greater opportunity to learn a second language without impacting the core first language skills is fine by me.

This is an incredibly polarized debate with no give and take being shown at all. It's almost worthwhile to post a "Vive le EFI" or "Ban EFI now" message on the boards to see what the response is.

This is no longer about EFI and hasn't been for quite some time. It is about democratic process being completely dismissed by the Liberal government. People tend to look the other way when the decision is okay with them. The problem with that is that the next time, it may not be a decision you support and the precedent has been set and established that democratic process is not necessary in NB.
Regardless of one's position on EFI, the whole process is unacceptable and deeply disturbing. The more you learn the more disturbing it gets.
